Can cats eat raw dough?

Dangerous

No. Raw yeast dough is dangerous twice over: a cat's warm stomach acts as an oven, so the dough keeps rising and stretches the stomach painfully — and as the yeast ferments, it produces ethanol, which is absorbed into the blood and causes alcohol poisoning. Even a small stolen lump of bread or pizza dough warrants a call to the vet.

Yeast needs warmth and moisture to ferment, and a stomach supplies both generously. Once swallowed, the dough continues to expand, which can distend the stomach enough to cause pain, retching, and breathing difficulty. Meanwhile fermentation turns sugars into carbon dioxide and ethanol. Animals absorb that alcohol quickly, and a cat's small body means even a modest amount of dough can produce a significant blood alcohol level, leading to wobbliness, disorientation, depression of the nervous system, and in severe cases coma or seizures.

Baked bread does not carry these risks — the yeast is dead and the alcohol has evaporated — though bread is empty calories for a cat and no substitute for cat food. The dangerous window is the countertop rise: bowls of proofing dough should sit somewhere a counter-surfing cat cannot reach.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Swollen, painful belly
  • Unproductive retching or vomiting
  • Wobbliness and disorientation
  • Marked lethargy or collapse
  • Slowed breathing, coma, or seizures in severe cases

What to do

Call your vet or an animal poison line immediately — dough expansion and alcohol poisoning both progress quickly. Do not try home remedies; the vet may need to remove the dough and support your cat through the alcohol intoxication.
