Is Poison Ivy toxic to dogs?

Low severity

Mildly. Severe cases are rare, but it can cause discomfort and is best kept out of reach.

Symptoms to watch for

  • contact dermatitis
  • gastrointestinal irritation
  • intense rash
  • itchy rash

How vets treat it

Bathing the pet in a colloidal oatmeal shampoo can help soothe the skin. Use gloves and a towel to wipe down the coat to remove oils.

Why it's dangerous

The clear liquid sap contains urushiol, which causes contact dermatitis upon skin exposure or gastrointestinal irritation if ingested.

Toxic compound: urushiol

Good to know

While dogs are less susceptible due to their fur, they can transmit the toxic oils to humans. Short-haired dogs are more at risk of skin reactions.
