Is Lantana toxic to dogs?

Moderate severity

Yes. It can cause real illness — contact your vet if your pet has been exposed.

Symptoms to watch for

  • depression
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • weakness
  • liver failure

How vets treat it

Decontamination via induced vomiting or activated charcoal if ingestion is recent; supportive care for gastrointestinal upset and monitoring of liver enzymes.

Why it's dangerous

Toxicity is caused by triterpene acids which can lead to gastrointestinal irritation and, in severe cases or specific species, hepatic necrosis and liver failure.

Good to know

Toxicity varies by flower color and season; unripe berries are more dangerous than ripe ones. While liver failure is a risk, it is more common in livestock than companion animals.
