Is Oxalates (Insoluble) toxic to dogs?

Moderate severity

Yes. It can cause real illness — contact your vet if your pet has been exposed.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Drooling
  • Oral pain
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased appetite
  • Swelling of the upper airway
  • Difficulty breathing

How vets treat it

Rinse the mouth with water or milk to remove crystals; monitor for airway swelling and seek veterinary care if breathing is labored.

Why it's dangerous

Chewing or biting into the plant releases needle-like crystals that cause tissue penetration and irritation to the mouth and gastrointestinal tract.

Toxic compound: Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals

Good to know

Insoluble calcium oxalates have a different mechanism of toxicity than soluble oxalates like rhubarb or star fruit. Airway swelling is very rare.
