Why it's dangerous
Chewing or biting into the plant releases needle-like crystals that cause tissue penetration and irritation to the mouth and gastrointestinal tract.

Good to know
Insoluble calcium oxalates have a different mechanism of toxicity than soluble oxalates like rhubarb or star fruit. Airway swelling is very rare.
