Why it's dangerous

When punctured or swallowed, batteries leak corrosive materials that cause chemical burns and tissue injury to the mouth, esophagus, and gastrointestinal tract.

Toxic compound: Alkaline or acidic material

Good to know

Ulcers in the mouth may not be visible for several hours after ingestion or puncture. Lithium and button batteries are particularly dangerous.
