How vets treat it
No treatment plan written for cats was found. VCA describes treatment for pets in general: the vet clears as much of the toxin as possible, gives liver-protecting medicine and supportive care, and repeats blood tests to track liver enzymes. Care becomes more intensive if liver damage develops.
Outlook
No survival figures for cats were found: every published survival rate comes from dog studies. VCA says the outlook for pets is generally fair with early diagnosis and treatment, and that delayed treatment raises the risk of long-term effects or death.
Where pets are exposed
- Sago palm (Cycas revoluta), also sold as Japanese sago palm, king sago palm or cycad.
- Related cycads that carry the same toxins, such as the coontie palm and the cardboard palm (Zamia species).
- Gardens and yards. In the US, sago palms are most common in the South but are found nationwide.
- Potted plants and bonsai sold at nurseries and home-improvement stores. Cardboard palms are turning up in garden stores too.
- Every part of the plant: the seeds (sometimes called nuts), fronds, stem and roots. The seeds, which are orange to red on female plants, are the most toxic part, and pets are drawn to the plant.
Prevention
- The only sure prevention is to keep pets and sago palms apart. Don't keep one in your home or in a yard your pet can reach.

Are sago palms toxic to cats?
Yes. ASPCA, VCA and NC State list sago palm as toxic to cats, and VCA calls it highly toxic to dogs and cats. No published reports of poisoned cats could be found, though, so there are no cat-specific figures for dose, timing or survival. Treat any chewing as an emergency.
How many sago palm seeds can kill a dog?
No source gives a measured number for dogs. ASPCA says as few as 1 to 2 seeds can be fatal, but that statement doesn't name a species or give a body weight. VCA says even a small amount of plant material can cause serious effects. No source gives a safe amount, so treat any seed or piece of the plant as an emergency.
How long after eating sago palm will my dog get sick?
Vomiting and lethargy can start within 15 minutes to several hours, and the Merck Veterinary Manual says first signs often appear within 4 hours. Liver failure can follow within 48 to 72 hours, and liver blood tests can stay normal for up to 72 hours. In some dogs that seem to recover, serious liver damage shows up weeks to months later.
Can a dog survive sago palm poisoning?
Yes, many do, especially with fast treatment, but survival varies a lot between studies. Deaths ranged from about 12% of dogs in the largest study (130 dogs) to 64% in a study of 14 dogs. Activated charcoal given by the vet was linked to better survival, and dogs that get prompt, aggressive care have a fair to good outlook.
My dog ate part of a sago palm but seems fine. Do I still need a vet?
Yes. Call a vet or a pet poison line now. Liver damage is delayed, and blood tests can stay normal for up to 72 hours. Early decontamination by the vet gives the best chance of a good outcome.
