Is Garlic toxic to cats?

High severity

Yes. Exposure can cause serious illness and needs prompt veterinary attention.

  • Pale gums
  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased respiratory rate
  • Weakness
  • Exercise intolerance

How vets treat it

Seek immediate veterinary care for decontamination, monitoring of red blood cell counts, and supportive care such as IV fluids or blood transfusions if anemia is severe.

Why it's dangerous

Garlic causes oxidative damage to red blood cells, leading to their rupture and subsequent anemia. It is significantly more potent than other Allium species like onions.

Good to know

Garlic is 5 times more toxic than onions. Japanese breeds like Akita and Shiba Inu are more susceptible. Signs can be delayed up to one week after ingestion.
