Why it's dangerous
When the plant is crushed or chewed, the chemical ranunculin is converted into protoanemonin, a bitter-tasting oil that acts as a potent irritant to the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract.

The flower contains the highest concentration of toxin. Ingestion is usually limited by the bitter taste and immediate oral irritation, though serious symptoms like seizures can occur with large amounts.
