Why it's dangerous
The plant contains the toxic alkaloid colchicine which inhibits cell division and causes multi-organ failure, including severe damage to the gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.

Good to know
All parts of the plant are poisonous. Symptoms may be immediate or delayed for several days. Do not confuse with the less toxic spring crocus (Iridaceae family).
