How vets treat it

Immediate decontamination by flushing the exposed area with large amounts of water, gastrointestinal protectants, fluid therapy, and symptomatic supportive care.

Why it's dangerous

Alkaline substances cause deep, penetrating chemical burns and liquefactive necrosis that can affect multiple tissue layers. Unlike acids, they often lack immediate pain, leading to larger ingestions and severe corrosive injury to the eyes, skin, and gastrointestinal tract.

Alkaline products typically have little taste or odor, making larger ingestions more likely; they can cause rupture or perforation of the esophagus or intestines.
